Grow Your Own: Jam
In preparation for the Thanksgiving season, spend a Friday night exploring the wonderful world of apples. Sip on hot mulled cider (spiked or not) as Rachel Saunders of Blue Chair Jam demonstrates how to make apple jelly & apple butter. Unique in their flavor, texture, and physical properties, apples are among the most versatile fruits for preserving. We will examine the different ways to use apples and why apples play such an important role in jam making, with a focus on the cooking process itself and on creating beautiful textures and flavors. We will cook two delicious preserves: apple jelly and apple butter, adding herbs to one and spices to the other. You will go home with your very own jar of apple preserves!
