Fourth Annual Harvest Fest Overview
Saturday, October 13, 2007
10:00 AM – 4:00 PM

Harvest Fest is a community celebration of the farm at its most fruitful. At this annual event, Stone Barns invites visitors to share in all that the farm offers at this bountiful time of year. The mission of Stone Barns Center—to celebrate, teach and advance community-based food production and enjoyment—resonates throughout the day.

Activities
Activities at Harvest Fest 2007 included farm tours and demonstrations, face painting, farm Olympics, seasonal taste tests, arts and crafts, storytelling and hayrides. Highlights included honey extraction and sheep-moving demonstrations and tours led by farmers Jack Algiere and Craig Haney, educator Judy Fink and chef Dan Barber.

Attendance
Over 2,000 visitors participated in Harvest Fest 2007:
• 1,332 adults
• 201 youth
• 418 children

A total of 120 volunteers participated in all aspects of the event, from staffing information tables to serving food to painting faces.

Food
In the morning, chefs from Blue Hill at Stone Barns offered seasonal tastings of local apples, squash soup and pickled vegetables. Lunch featured roasted Berkshire pigs, hot dogs, sauerkraut and potato salad—all made from ingredients grown and raised on our farm. Keeper Springs, Newman’s Own and Fizzy Lizzy donated beverages, and Balthazar Bakery donated hot dog buns and rolls.

Farm Market
A lively farm market area offered visitors an opportunity to purchase local and seasonal items from regional purveyors such as maple products, ice cream, cheese, pies and cookies, chutneys, apples and apple cider, eggs, vegetables and compost. Participating vendors included Connie’s Bakery and General Store, Red Jacket Orchards, Main Street Sweets, Golden Maple Shanty, Schoolhouse Kitchens, Consider Bardwell, Blue Hill at Stone Barns and Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture.

Music
Nashville’s Adrienne Young and Little Sadie performed two lively sets and gave a children’s music workshop on the main stage in the courtyard.

Seasonal Pie Bakeoff
Martha Stewart returned for the second year in a row to judge our seasonal pie bakeoff. A total of 43 bakers entered pies ranging from sweet apple pie to savory pork pie. Blue Hill at Stone Barns chefs narrowed the field to the top 10 before the final judging from the main stage.

The winning pies were:
#1: Ty & Lauren Amsterdam’s mud pie
#2: Rebecca Beaton’s black walnut pie
#3: Jennie Hartman’s apple pie

Winners received donated prizes including dinner at Blue Hill at Stone Barns, a recycled cotton blanket from in2green.com and a gift certificate to the Stone Barns Farm Store.

Cultivator Breakfast
The Cultivator Breakfast was offered as a special benefit for donors at the Cultivator level ($1,000) and above. Guests were invited to enjoy “VIP” parking and shuttle service between Stone Barns and a nearby parking lot, along with a special breakfast in the private dining room of Blue Hill at Stone Barns and private hay rides. A total of 74 people from 21 families attended the breakfast.
