Summer on the Farm Weekend 2010

Saturday and Sunday, August 7 and 8, 2010

Join us to celebrate the delicious summer harvest! Stop by our tasting table to sample our favorite tomato and pepper varieties, learn how to make quick pickles from farm fresh veggies, dig in for our potato harvest, or take a canning or seed saving class. It’s a great time to visit Stone Barns! 

Summer Scavenger Hunt

Explore the fields, gardens, and pastures at Stone Barns and discover what’s growing. You might be surprised by what you find. If you find all of our vegetables and fruits, you’ll win a prize!

Summer Tasting Table

Take a taste of a selection of the many summer vegetables we grow at Stone Barns: notice the variation between different types of tomatoes or taste some summer peppers. Pick up handouts with some of our favorite summer recipes, and learn a bit about the different vegetables we’re harvesting now.

Farm Market & Canning Demonstration

Shop our Farm Market for summer’s freshest vegetables, fruits and herbs as well as our pastured meats and eggs. Red Barn Bakery will join the market offering organic baked goods and savory tarts. An ongoing canning demonstration led by Kelly Geary, chef and owner of Sweet Deliverance, will help you learn how to preserve the bounty of the summer harvest. This can be the summer that you put up pickles, jams, and jellies galore!

Flowers on the Farm
Saturday, August 7

Join us for this farmer-led discussion, tour and demonstration focusing on the many ways you can use flowers – from culinary and medicinal ingredients to aesthetic and artistic pursuits. Shannon Algiere, the Center’s Flower and Herb Manager, will begin the class with an in-depth discussion exploring the nature of flowers from their role on the farm to their cultural history. Afterwards, the class will walk out to the flower gardens where they will identify varieties, harvest edible flowers, and Shannon will demonstrate the process of making a flower essence. Then, as the culminating activity, the class will move inside to make a salad and hors d’oeuvres using edible flowers, and assemble seasonal bouquets.

Farm to Table: Refrigerator Pickles
Saturday & Sunday, August 7 & 8

Explore Stone Barns’ fields and get your hands dirty harvesting cucumbers or carrots and herbs from our garden. Then learn how to turn those vegetables into delicious refrigerator pickles. All participants will take home a jar of their own refrigerator pickles.

Story Time at the Farm Store

Join us for Story Time featuring Stone Barns Center’s farm or programs staff reading I Will Never Not Eat a Tomato by Lauren Child. No need to register, just stop by! Appropriate for children ages 3-6. Story of the day will be available at a 25% discount.

Pick Your Own Eggs
Saturday & Sunday, August 7 & 8

During this program you and your family will get an inside peek at egg production on a small farm while getting hands-on experience with our chickens. Join us to collect freshly laid eggs, then hand-wash and package them just like Stone Barns’ farmers do. The fresh eggs you’ve collected will be yours to take home and enjoy! You will never look at farm work or store bought eggs in the same way. Each participant receives a half dozen eggs to take home.

Seed Saving: Tomatoes
Saturday & Sunday, August 7 & 8

Dig in at Stone Barns! Learn about the importance of biodiversity and how to save tomato seeds for next season. We’ll talk about how to avoid tomato diseases such as late blight by saving seeds. Each participant will harvest a tomato and begin the seed saving process.

Hands On on the Farm: Potato Harvesting

Garden with your kids! Learn about what’s growing at Stone Barns and lend a hand in the Vegetable Field to dig up potatoes. This is the perfect time to pitch in for the summer potato harvest. Each participant will take home 4 newly dug potatoes.

Always wanted to make homemade jams or tangy pickles?  Kelly Geary, chef and founder of Sweet Deliverance, will show you that you can, can.  Kelly will discuss the many ways that you can preserve the bounty of the summer harvest and will show you the techniques you need to do it safely and deliciously.  Pitch in to assist Kelly in making a pickle and a jam, and take a sample home with you.

Felted Tomatoes
Saturday & Sunday, August 7 & 8

Join us to craft a tomato out of colorful felt. Each child will make a small felted tomato, and decorate it with a stem and leaves.
