Spiced Ginger Tea (From Brooklyn Soda Works)

A cold weather drink perfect for those winter nights, and especially good if you’re feeling under the weather.

While we specialize in carbonated beverages, it’s always nice to be able to make a seasonal appropriate drink for this time of the year.

Spiced Ginger Tea (makes one liter or 4 servings)

4 oz ginger root (sliced)
4 tablespoons honey
5 cardamom pods
1 star anise
10 cloves
juice of one lemon

Add sliced ginger, star anise and cardamom to 1 liter of boiling water.

Simmer for 20 minutes

Add in cloves and simmer for additional 5 minutes

Cut the heat. Add juice of one lemon.

Sweeten with honey, filter, and serve in mugs, with a warm blanket.

Optional: use more ginger for increased spice level. Or you can substitute an orange for the lemon, and throw some of the orange zest along with cloves.

Also optional: add some whiskey for an adult version!

Brooklyn Soda Works is part of the Center’s extended community of artisans and experts. They make hand-squeezed, fresh, carbonated juices, and never uses syrups or fruit concentrates. Co-founder Antonio Ramos, who shared this recipe with us, taught a fantastic soda class as part of the Center’s Grow Your Own series this past summer. Look for their sodas on tap in select NYC locations!
